Plan your route ahead of time. Freeway exits are numbered in sequential order, so if you already know you have to get off at Exit 56, you will know when you are getting close. Note that some freeways use names as well as numbers for their exits, so Exit 56 may also be designated as Main Street.
Recognize the different types of signs that you see. If you are driving on an Interstate, it will be marked with a blue and red shield with white numerals. A US Highway is designated by a black and white shield. Signage for state highways varies by state, so look up what these signs look like where you live. However, freeway exit signs will always be large, green signs with white writing. If you are taking an exit that merges onto another freeway, that freeway's shield will appear on the large green exit sign.
Read the mileage signs. Many freeways feature signs to warn you of your exit before it comes. These signs will be featured prominently and will usually list the names of the next three exits as well as how many miles away they are. These signs are placed to give you time to move safely into the exit lane.
Be aware of any special or unusual features about the exit you are taking. For example, while most freeway exits are on the right, the occasional left-hand exit does exist. This information usually appears on the mileage sign alongside the exit name.
Avoid getting off at the wrong exit by taking notice of the signs around you. If the upcoming exit sign features a yellow warning that says "Exit Only," you will need to change lanes if this is not the exit you want. Similarly, some large exits, such as freeway interchanges, may have more than one exit lane. Follow the overhead signs to make sure you end up on the correct road.
