Remain calm and do not make any rash decisions. Survey your surroundings for anything that may be useful to create shelter or a weapon.
Choose a location to build a shelter. Near a river or lake is ideal because it makes you more visible from the air and also because you will be near a food source (you can catch fish) as well as a water source. If you cannot find a lake or river, try to find a cave that can protect you from the weather.
Create a fire where you wish to have your shelter. You can make a fire with a lighter or matches. Or you can direct sunlight through a piece of magnifying glass (you can use eyeglasses) onto a pile of dried leaves and bark. Or another option is taking two pieces of dry wood, sharpening one of them and using it to drill into the other dry piece of wood. Drill until a small ember is created, then quickly and gently dump that ember onto a pile of dry leaves and bark. Blow gently on the ember to create a fire.
Build a shelter if your location is out in the open. You can do this by leaning long tree branches against the trunk of a tree and then layering on top more branches with leaves. The more leaves you add to your shelter, the more insulated it will be. Use leaves to create a bedding inside your shelter. Make sure not to build your shelter too close to the fire, to avoid it catching on fire.
Find water. This is more important than food because the human body can survive longer without food than water. If you are near a water source, gather water using a canteen or any sort of plastic. Put this canteen or plastic over your fire and boil it to ensure purity. If you have no canteen or plastic container, lay out a tarp or a plastic bag overnight. It will collect dew, which is drinkable water.
Find food. Observe what the animals eat. If they eat it, you can eat it too. Bugs, worms and snakes are good sources of protein. Try to capture a rabbit or small creature by digging up trap holes. Create a spear out of sharpened wood and try to catch a fish.
Create a smoke signal. Make a separate fire and put live, green branches on top of it.
