Measure the longest side of the bag. Write down the measurement on a piece of paper. This measurement will represent the length of the luggage.
Use the measuring tape to determine the height of the bag. The height of the luggage will be the measurement of the side perpendicular to the longest side of the bag. Write this number down.
Measure the depth or width of the luggage by placing the measuring tape between the front and back of the bag. This side of the luggage is often where the bag's zipper is found. Write down this measurement.
Add the length, height and width measurements and verify that the total does not exceed Continental's baggage size requirements. As of April 2011, Continental Airlines accepts checked baggage with a maximum linear measurement of 62 inches, while carry-on bags are accepted up to a size of 45 inches.
