How to Find the Best Air Fare Season

With airlines imposing fees on everything from extra baggage to aisle seats to snacks, it is no wonder that travelers are looking for ways to save money. Finding a good air fare season is one way to do this. Each destination has a peak and an off-peak season. These peak and off-peak seasons depend on the weather and events at the destination, and the weather of the places travelers are coming from. For example, the Caribbean has a steady, warm climate year-round, but travelers from colder climates enjoy visiting the Caribbean in the winter, driving up demand and thus, prices.

Determine where you want to go. Each destination has predictable peak and off-peak seasons.

    • 2

Research the destination to find out when peak and off-peak seasons begin and end. You can do this by visiting that destination's website or by calling the local tourist bureau. Calling the tourist bureau has its advantages because you can ask when off-peak season is and why it is off-peak. A particular destination may look inviting online during the off season, but you may not want to visit it if you discover that shops, restaurants and attractions close down.

Use an online fare predictor such as Bing.com/travel or Kayak.com to determine whether fares are going up or down to identify when the best time to travel is. Bing tries to predict which way fares are going in the next 30 to 90 days, whereas Kayak offers you the cheapest air fares by dates of travel.
