Travel Guide to Amsterdam

Situated across 160 man-made canals, Amsterdam has one of Europe's largest history city centers. The city's peak tourist season is during the summer. Off-season visits can be rainy and chilly, but discounted hotel rates and smaller crowds at attractions help make up for unpleasant weather.
  1. Language

    • The primary language of Amsterdam is Dutch, and residents are also familiar with English and German from school. However, travelers should not assume English will always be spoken; they are advised to pack a dictionary or phrase book. Dutch language guides may come in handy in day-to-day situations, like ordering a meal, as well as emergencies.

    Transport

    • Amsterdam has a large public transport network, including trams, buses, trains and ferry. The Public Transport (GVB) station is opposite Amsterdam's Central Station; it provides public transport information and sells transportation tickets.

    Lodging

    • Accommodation is available throughout the city, including hotels, hostels, and bed and breakfasts. The Flying Pig Youth Hostel is located near the Central Station and has a fully equipped kitchen. Hotel Okura Amsterdam is a luxury hotel situated on Amsterdam's historic Amstel Canal. The Adriaen van Ostade Bed and Breakfast is in a historic building near the Museum Plein.

    Safety

    • Amsterdam is considered safe compared to many large cities. However, officials warn tourists to be vigilant against pick-pockets who are especially active during the summer months and on trains. The official emergency services number in Amsterdam is 112. This is the equivalent of the American 911 number and should be used only in case of emergency.

    Drugs

    • It is legal to purchase small amounts of cannabis or hashish, no more than five grams, in Amsterdam's "coffee houses." However, it is illegal and dangerous to purchase excessive quantities of cannabis or hashish; buying cannabis or hashish outside of designated "coffee houses" is also illegal.

    Attractions

    • Tourist attractions in Amsterdam include the Amsterdam Historical Museum, Amsterdam's historic Nieuwmarkt District and the Hortus Botanicus.
