Travel in Amsterdam

This charming Dutch city of 160 man-made canals, 7,000 monuments and hospitable people has a progressive, user-friendly public transportation system that can be challenging at first.
  1. Bike

    • The easiest way to get around Amsterdam is by bike. It's a great way to see the sights, and there are many companies that rent them.

    Car

    • Of all the European capitals, traffic in Amsterdam tends to be the least stressful. To rent a car in the Netherlands, you must have an international driver's license, which can be obtained in the United States from a DMV or a AAA office.

    Ferry

    • The Buiksloterwegveer free ferry is popular among tourists. It travels between Central and North Amsterdam.

    Metro

    • Amsterdam's modern, easy-to-use underground Metro has limited service in the town center. It's used mainly by suburban residents and visitors.

    Tram and Bus

    • Tram and bus lines start at Centraal Station, and the main station is Marnixstraat. Buses and trams operate from 6 a.m. until midnight every day of the week and have stops throughout the city.
