Unusual Restaurants in Sacramento

There's something culinary going down in Sacramento. Restaurants have a way of opening and closing with regularity, but at any given time visitors can find such a variety of cuisines that they are likely to find the perfect choice for any craving. Some of these restaurants are unusual in the creative ways or places that they serve their food. Although Sacramento isn't as well-known for its diversity like cities such as Chicago or New York, there are several unique and unusual restaurants from which you can choose.
  1. Mix Downtown

    • There aren't many nightclubs in Sacramento, which is why Mix Downtown, a combination club and restaurant, is so unusual. Its modern setting includes dark wood tables, upholstered chairs and plush couches indoors, where a full bar with plenty of seating is also available. Patrons can enjoy outdoor seating on the rooftop terrace, which offers exceptional views of the city. The food served here is served on small plates, tapas-style. They're great for sharing, so any party will be able to sample from a variety of plates, rather than settle on just one. There are over 30 wines by the glass, so connoisseurs can enjoy eclectic and diverse pairings. Plates include ahi tuna with a spicy soy dressing, kobe beef sliders, roasted vegetable flatbread and chicken skewers with basil pesto. When the night begins to age, the tables are pushed aside to make room for a dance floor, so dress accordingly.

    OneSpeed

    • Waterboy has been a high-end restaurant in Sacramento for years, helmed by local chef celebrity Rick Mahan. His younger, more laid-back restaurant is OneSpeed. The name comes from the chef's love for Schwinn cruiser bikes. Being made for slow cycling, these bikes pair well with the restaurant's idea of taking it easy and enjoying oneself. Unlike other neighborhood pizza joints, OneSpeed offers creative choices fueled by local ingredients and very simple cooking methods. Traditional choices include the Margherita with fresh mozzarella, parmesan and basil. More creative pizzas include the Carbonera, with Applewood smoked bacon, arugula, sautéed onions, fontina, parmesan and egg. Antipasti plates include dishes such as marinated olives and a salad of red beets and green beans. Delivery is also available, and it's done on a old one-speed bike.

    La Boheme

    • Many restaurants in Sacramento offer creative or modern twists on classic cuisine. Refreshingly, some restaurants simply focus on the classics and pride themselves on doing them very well. Enter La Boheme, located in the Fair Oaks suburb. This upscale French restaurant is everything you'd want in a French restaurant. It is classy, serves elegant cuisine and has an intensely romantic atmosphere. Many French restaurants in Sacramento have tried to create this atmosphere, but La Boheme has succeeded. The interior is composed of purple-red wallpaper and wood paneling. A bookshelf-fireplace combo against one wall gives the restaurant a homey feel. White linen and flower centerpieces offer a dignified air. Classic entrées include Steak Diane, Duck Lé Orange and starters of escargot. Elk meat and Chateaubriand also find space in the menu. Desserts are personified by the ambitious cherries jubilee, flambéed tableside. It's an impressive end to any meal here.
