Norwegian Cruise Lines Rules & Regulations

For many people a cruise is a dream vacation. Norwegian Cruise Lines is known for being one of the best in the business. Often people have questions before their first cruise. Although rules and regulations can change, the basics stay the same.

  1. Expenses

    • Some of the most common inquiries when it comes to cruising have to do with expenses. What is included in the ticket price? What onboard expenses might the passenger incur? Your ticket pays for your cabin, your standard meals, and on-ship entertainment. Specialty restaurants are not included, nor are soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. Spa treatments, Internet, laundry, photographs and casino usage are among the amenities that will cost extra.

Tipping the staff is not mandatory but is allowed.

    Customs

    • Any articles acquired abroad by U.S. residents, including duty-free items, must be declared upon returning to the United States. Up to $1,200 in duty-free items may be declared, including one liter of alcohol (you must be at least 21 years of age), 100 cigars or 200 cigarettes. Norwegian Cruise Lines staff will help explain the customs process.

    Smoking

    • Public areas on all Norwegian Cruise Lines ships are smoke-free. Cigarette smoking is allowed in certain staterooms and on their balconies. Cigars and pipes are allowed in the Cigar Bar or in other designated areas.

    Age Restrictions

    • Passengers under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a traveler who is at least 21; the underage passenger must share a room or reside in a connecting stateroom, and the traveler of age must take full responsibility for supervising the underage passenger.

Norwegian Cruise Lines permits individuals ages 18 to 20 to purchase and drink beer or wine "once the vessel is outside the U.S. state territorial waters." A parent must be present, and Alaskan and Hawaiian itineraries are an exception to this policy. In all other cases, guests must be at least 21 to purchase or drink alcohol.

Guests must be at least 18 and show proof of age to gamble in onboard casinos. If under 18, the guest forfits any winnings.

    Service Charges

    • A $12 per day per person (3 years and older) service charge is added to your account. This rate is subject to change. The service charge can be prepaid if desired. The service charge will be refunded in the event you cancel your cruise.

    Health and Safety

    • Friends or guests who are not booked on the cruise are not allowed to visit passengers onboard.

No diapers of any kind are allowed in pools. A doctor and a nurse are present onboard, but you will be charged accordingly for assistance. Women past their 24th week of pregnancy are asked to wait to cruise until after their child is born.

    Luggage

    • Only two pieces of luggage are allowed per guest, and each piece of luggage must not weigh more than 50 pounds.
