That's because the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs says that you need a license to guide or direct people to points of interest and attractions. No matter what type of tour you want to lead, the process requires extensive New York City knowledge.
Complete and submit the Basic Individual License Application. You can fill out the application online at the Department of Consumer Affairs website. The application asks for your contact and employment information, and includes some background questions. The fee for the application varies, depending on when you apply, and includes both the application and exam costs.
Read the Professional Licensing Examination: New York City Sightseeing Guide Study Reference. This online document will tell you what needs to be studied to pass the sightseeing exam. It even suggests the books you should read. For example, you'll need to know the subway system and the history of New York City, and have basic knowledge of museums and important cultural sights.
Take the sightseeing exam. Within five days after you submit your application, you must go to the Department of Consumer Affairs to take the sightseeing exam---so be sure to study hard before you apply online.
