Applying for a passport is necessary if you would like to travel just about anywhere outside of the United States. New federal rules for international air travelers require that they hold current passports as identification, which is the only form of ID that some airlines will accept on overseas flights. Fortunately the procedure is still fairly straightforward and, if necessary, quick.
Obtain Form DS-11, available online from the Department of State. The form can be filled out online and then printed out. But don't sign it right away.
Gather a document proving your citizenship. This can be a previously issued passport, birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, or certificate of citizenship.
Gather an identification document. This can be a previously issued passport, naturalization certificate, valid driver's license, current government ID, or military ID. You must also present a photocopy of the ID, on standard 8.5x11 paper.
Have two passport photos taken at a drugstore or studio that specializes in passport photos and knows the exact specifications.
Bring the documents and applications to a passport acceptance facility. You can find the nearest to your home by searching by zip code at the Department of State's web page. You can also bring the application to a passport agency.
Pay the application fee, which for ordinary passports is $75, plus a $25 processing fee. Renewals are $75 and require form DS-82. Rush service is also available for an additional $60. The passport will arrive by overnight Express Mail.
