What Do Hotel Ratings Mean?

The Official Hotel & Resort Guide developed the hotel rating system, which originally was available only to travel agents. The Mobile Travel Guide, a consumer guide, rates all U.S. hotels and foreign ones. Rating systems differ between the U.S. and other countries, so you should view worldwide hotel ratings only as general guidelines.

  1. One Star

    • One-star hotels are usually small and independently owned. Although inexpensive, they provide simple accommodations with little or no amenities.

    Two Stars

    • Two-star hotels tend to be small to medium-size but offer more extensive facilities than one-star hotels at an affordable price.

    Three Stars

    • Three-star hotels offer more amenities that can appeal to business travelers. They have more staff and more personalized service.

    Four Stars

    • Four-star hotels provide what is considered to be superior to deluxe accommodations. These include 24-hour room service and on-site restaurant facilities.

    Five Stars

    • Five-star hotels offer everything that four-star hotels do, but with what is considered to be flawless service and the highest comfort standards. Five-star hotels also offer state-of-the-art facilities.
