Things to Do on a Family Beach Vacation

When some people think of beach vacations, they picture themselves getting away from the stresses of the workday world by relaxing in a beach chair, gazing out at the ocean with a tropical beverage at arm's length. Others want to make the most of their beautiful surroundings by taking in as many fun and exciting activities as possible, with a possible day off for a spa. Either way, beach vacations are a great way to spend some hard-earned time off with the family.

  1. Fun In The Water

    • Beach vacations are fantastic for families because there is a variety of things to do for people of all ages. The brave and active family can shake off the urge to sleep in, and instead rise early for the day's best waves. Surfing is some of the most fun you will ever have, even if you're bad at it. Rest assured, you will be bad at it the first time you try, but make sure you take some time with an instructor, pick out a nice, long beginner's board and start practicing those pop-ups. Even if you never stand up the board, it's always great fun trying, and you'll feel like a king of the ocean the first time you do actually ride a wave. If surfing seems like too much of a challenge, grab a set of boogie boards for the family, swim out a ways together and race each other to shore the easy way. Guided snorkeling excursions also are available at many beaches if you've got teens or older kids along for the trip.

    Fun On The Water

    • Once everyone is worn out from battling the waves, you might consider putting on your best floral printed shirt and taking the family on a boat tour. Glass-bottom boat tours are available at beaches throughout the world, and the guides have excellent knowledge of where the sea's most interesting creatures are hiding. Is your family looking for a bit more interactivity? Pontoon rentals and charter fishing tours can provide what you're looking for. Few things are as exhilarating as feeling that first nibble and then having a whopper strike at your line.

    Fun On Land

    • There also is plenty to do back on land. For the athletic crowd, beach volleyball can be a fun bonding activity and great exercise for the family. Don't be afraid of a face full of sand. Dive for that ball; the ocean is just a few feet away. Golf also is a popular option offered by many beach resorts.

Once daylight is fading, everyone can enjoy the sunset over the ocean. Just grab a few sandwiches and a bottle of wine (or sparkling cider for the kids), stake out a spot in front of the water and witness one of the planet's most beautiful daily miracles. Once the sun is down, beach bonfires are a great way to meet other families and wind down the day.

Of course, vacations are meant for relaxation, so don't feel bad simply laying out a towel, slathering on some sunscreen and taking a nice, sunny nap.
