When someone is asking for or receiving a "comp" what they are talking about is something complimentary or free given by the casino to you the guest or "player". Most people think of comps in 2 respects. They are thinking the players cards or the big gamblers are the recipients of these lovely free items, like food, gifts, rooms and more. But there is also other ways as well.
First always have a players card. You can sign up for one in almost any casino and often times depending on ownership you may be able to use the same card in multiple casinos. Then when you have one of these cards make sure to hand them over to the dealer or put them into the slot machines. What its doing is counting your bets, the time you have logged into playing whatever game it is you are using. As you accrue these points you can redeem them for free casino credit towards most anything. Its basically a "rewards" card like your credit cards that applies to their casinos. Have fun and don't spend it all one place!
You will also get comped if you are playing large sums of money or in high volume. Again the above rule still applies use a players card so the casino can track your play. But if you are truly betting high dollars, chances are you don't need much of a players card...they know who you are. And you will be getting plenty of comps along the way.
Heres the thing that many people don't do or know about! When you are reserving your hotel room, call ahead and ask to speak with the casino host. Explain to them that you plan on betting a decent amount of money, something higher than a few thousand. After you tell them that ask flat out what that casino would like to offer you to stay and bet that money in their casino. You will certainly get food, if not more provided to you. Then when you go, make sure you buy onto a few tables with a few hundred dollars. Now just because you have it on the table doesn't mean you have to bet big or heavy. As long as you stay there for a little while you can pick up your chips and move on. Do that a few times and you should get comped again. Don't be afraid to ask for those comps!
Get friendly with the staff, especially the pit bosses. The more they like you the better chance you have on getting some free stuff. Also, when you sign up for your players card give the correct info, because you will be getting free coupons in the mail. Large discounts to stay, free money to play on slots. The more you continue to go to the same place the more often you will be comped.
