The largest city in the state, Virginia Beach, is a popular destination for spring break. With more than 35 miles of shoreline, you can lie out on one of the city's most beautiful beaches, take a surfing lesson, take a walk along the famous three-mile long boardwalk and head into town at night to visit its many bars and nightclubs. Make sure to squeeze in time for a picnic at the oceanfront First Landing State Park, and then go boating, and perhaps even try your hand at deep-sea fishing.

If you are a lover of culture, head to Newport News, home to many museums. Visit the Newport News Virginia Mariner's Museum, the Virginia Living Museum (wildlife-centered, with a planetarium), the Virginia War Museum and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, which features rotating art exhibits. There are outdoor activities to be found in Leeward Marina, Riverview Farm Park and Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort. Also, no trip to the city is complete without a visit to the famous Newport News clothing store.

Virginia has many beautiful rural areas, with forests spreading more than 65 percent of the entire state. Camp, hike and melt S'mores under the stars in the one of the most beautiful places in Virginia: Pocahontas State Park, which is only 20 miles outside of the state capitol of Richmond. Camp near Swift Creek Lake and you can rent kayaks, canoes or rowboats, or go fishing for bass and bluegill. Horseback riding is also available. Follow the trails and see deer, cottontail rabbits, owls and even wild turkeys. There is also a Civilian Conservation Corps Museum for the history lovers.
