How to Weigh Luggage Accurately at Home

If you reach the airline ticket counter with overweight luggage, you may be forced to leave items behind or pay the airline penalty for overweight luggage. Weigh luggage before leaving home to make certain your large suite cases don’t exceed the airline’s limits.

Things You'll Need

  • Luggage
  • Home scales

Instructions

    • 1

Pack your suitcase with everything you plan to put in it. Set it aside and locate your scales.

    • 2

Place the scales on a flat surface that is not carpeted. The bathroom floor will generally work unless the room is too small. If you have a large piece of luggage, you may want to take the scales and the suitcase to the kitchen or some other room that does not have carpet.

    • 3

Stepping on the scales and weigh yourself. It is important to get a true reading of your own weight and remember it precisely. Write it down.

    • 4

Pick up your luggage and step back on the scales again, holding your suitcase. Look at the new reading from the scales and write down that number.

    • 5

Subtract the first reading of you by yourself from the reading of both you and your piece of luggage.
