How to Use United Airlines Frequent Flyer Miles

The United Airlines Mileage Plus program is one of the most extensive frequent flyer programs. Its Star Alliance program partners with international carriers from all parts of the globe. Additionally, United Airlines has partnered with credit card companies, hotels, car rentals and shopping services. This allows you to earn more miles towards free tickets and upgrades.

Instructions

    • 1

Earn miles by flying with United Airlines and participating in partner hotel, car services and credit card companies.

    • 2

Sign up for United Airlines' promotion alerts. These may help you earn double or triple miles by taking specific flights or using specific services.

    • 3

Set a goal. Depending on the season, a United Airlines domestic, economy class ticket will require 25,000 miles, and an international ticket will require anywhere from 55,000 to 65,000 miles. Flights to Asia and the Middle East require 80,000 miles.

    • 4

Consider using the Mileage Plus Visa to purchase your tickets. Buy your ticket online, and then use your miles for a statement credit for the amount you paid. For example, a $500 ticket will require 50,000 miles.

Use your miles for hotel stays. United partners with Hyatt, Marriott and Radisson. One night at a Hyatt will require anywhere between 21,000 and 40,000 miles. A night at the Marriott requires between 40,500 and 45,000 miles. A night at a Radisson requires between 14,500 and 28,000 miles.
