If you have anxiety flying, there are some things to keep in mind that will help you relax. Claustrophobia is one of the biggest causes of anxiety, given the tiny seats, non-existent leg room and screaming children. An aisle seat helps. As soon as you book your flight, request an aisle seat. It's not any bigger, but it may give you peace of mind knowing at least you can get up any time you need to without waking up your snoring neighbor.

Most airlines have a channel that lets you listen to air traffic control, instead of music or the inevitably bland movie playing. This is very calming. Hearing the soothing, monotonous voices going back and forth between the pilots and the ground shows you just how boring and non-frightening flying really is.

Create a playlist of relaxing music on your mp3 player to take your mind off the trip. While it's playing, close your eyes and concentrate on deep breathing.

Request a seat near an exit. As unlikely as it is you'll have to evacuate, as the recent crash landing in the Hudson shows, it's not impossible. It may set you mind at ease to know that if you have to make an emergency exit, you're near the exit and will be able to get off the plane fast.

Wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. If you don't feel comfortable, you'll only be more inclined to be anxious. On the other hand, don't go for old sweats on a flight if you're the type of person who will feel self-conscious if everyone else is more dressed up than you.

If all else fails, your doctor can prescribe pills to help you relax. I've done this, and it really works. Or, order a glass of wine or two. It's guaranteed to take the edge off your anxiety. Just don't do both!
