How to Overcome Fear of Flying for Free

Fear of flying can be caused by different things but at all of them, the root is anxiety. It can be caused by the feeling of being "trapped" on the flight, claustrophobia (being trapped in a small space), or it can be caused by fear of the plane crashing. There are several ways to reduce your anxiety level and the fear and allow you to retain control of the experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Know what to expect. Having a basic understanding of how airplanes work can alleviate anxiety.

    • 2

Learn what the inside of the plane you will be flying on looks like. Familiarity can have a calming influence. Post a picture of the inside of the plane on your desk for a few weeks before your flight.

    • 3

Avoid watching the news for a few weeks prior to your flight. If there is a plane crash in that time it will increase anxiety levels. Do not watch movies or television shows about plane crashes.

    • 4

Choose an aisle seat near the wing. It will eliminate the feeling of being trapped in the plane and allow you to move about more easily. It is also the the part of the plane least affected by turbulence.

    • 5

Open the air valve which is positioned above your head and turn it on full blast. The cool air will keep you from sweating, which can increase anxiety. It also has a calming effect.

    • 6

Close your eyes and pretend you are in a car or on a bus.

    • 7

Chat with the person next to you if they are willing, watch the in-flight movie or read a book. Distraction can be a help.
