How to Bid for Plane Tickets

Bidding on airline tickets is often an effective way for passengers to reduce their travel expenses, if they are willing to make certain concessions. One of the few travel websites that allow bidding on air travel is Priceline, which makes it easy to place a bid and save on an airfare. If you are not picky about the exact time of your departure and return, using sites like Priceline can leave you with extra money to spend on other things.

Instructions

    • 1

Research airfare prices for the destinations you're considering. Different locations have different prices attached to them; for example, don't expect to get a flight from New York to Hawaii for the same price as a trip from New York to Boston. BidOnTravel recommends going to websites such as Orbitz.com or Expedia.com and entering your desired flight to find out how much a typical airfare is going for, for that time and destination.

    • 2

Go to Priceline and select the option to bid on a flight. Click on the "Bid Now" button, which is located just below the flight information form. You will be asked to name your desired departure and destination airports, your departure and return dates (but not times) and how many tickets you want to buy. Click the green "Bid Now" button, and you will be asked to select from a variety of airports in the vicinity and make an offer. You will also need to fill out some personal information.

    • 3

Enter your payment information. The next page will show you a basic itinerary without specific times, how much the total fare will cost with taxes and fees and contain a form asking you for more detailed personal information and a credit card number. Provide this information and click the "buy my tickets now" button at the bottom.

    • 4

Wait a few moments. After you commit to the bid, Priceline will process your offer before telling you if the bid was successful. If the airline accepts it, your credit card will be charged. The airline may also make a counter offer, which you will be asked to accept on the next page.

    • 5

If the bid is rejected, try again later, perhaps raising your bid to increase the chances of success. BidForTravel notes that you cannot immediately make a higher bid for the same tickets, but you can rebid right away if you change any of the options such as dates or airports.
