How to Relax on an Airplane

Some of us are better in the air than others. The key to stress-free airplane travel is as simple as following a few frequent flyer recommendations. You'll soon be as chill as the temperature at cruising altitude.

Understand that you have little control. This may seem counterintuitive, but facing the facts can help you relax on a trip. You are under the supervision of well-trained professionals and they will do everything in their power to help should an emergency occur. Unfortunately, the truth hurts, and the truth is: there is not much you can do at 30,000 miles in the air. Having said that, it is common knowledge (and a fact!) that it is safer to travel by air than it is to travel by car.

Travel in twosomes. Having a friend, relative or trusted acquaintance on board with you can take off the pressure. Similarly, having someone you love pick you up from the airport can give you something to look forward to during the flight.

Concentrate. Find something you are interested in and focus your energy on that hobby. Relaxing in the air can be easy if you immerse yourself in a good book, a difficult crossword puzzle or some fabulous music.

Drink. Believe it or not, there is a good reason for offering alcoholic beverages during airplane travel. Keep $5 or $10 handy for wine or cocktails. A responsible amount of alcohol can lessen stress or help you sleep on a plane. But remember, flight attendants prefer exact change!

Sleep. A catnap is an excellent solution for reducing stress during airplane travel. If you can get comfortable and fall asleep after take-off, sleeping can pass the time very, very quickly.

Block everything out. Close your eyes. Use earplugs if noise bothers you. Use a face mask for darkness and a blanket if you need to cover up. Try to keep warm. Airplane travel can be excessively cool and add to your level of stress. Wear socks! Cold feet can be a major annoyance.
