Inexpensive Vacations With Kids

Vacation with your family without breaking the bank. Hostels, campgrounds and even local day trips provide inexpensive ways families can get out together.
  1. Hostels

    • Hostels were once thought of as lodgings for teenagers and college students sleeping in bunk rooms, but hostels are not just for young adventurers. Hostels are frequently clean, family-friendly environments, great for overnight accommodations. Most of the time you don't have to sleep in the bunk room; many hostels have a private family room designed for families with young children. Common areas are available, where families spend time together playing cards, reading local magazines or books, or talking to other travelers. Talking to other travelers is part of the fun; they may have tips on inexpensive tours, pristine beaches or bargain restaurants. Bring your own food; most hostels have well-stocked kitchens access. Call ahead to find out about available amenities. Most hostels close during the day, so pack a lunch or plan to eat out for your mid-day meal.

    Stay-cation

    • Save money and stay home for your next vacation with your kids. Visit tourist attractions, museums and restaurants in your own town. You might go to the zoo or get that monstrous banana split at your local creamery. Catch a free concert or admire the murals near your town square. Eat at a restaurant you have always wanted to eat at. If you live in a more rural area, drive to your nearest city and explore everything there.

    The Great Outdoors

    • Many national parks offer inexpensive, tent-style lodging. Yosemite's Housekeeping Camp is considerably less expensive than staying in a lodge or hotel. There is electricity, so bring a microwave if you want to heat the food you take from home. The sleeping area has bunk beds and a double bed. You'll need sleeping bags for cold nights.
