The cable car is one of several iconic attractions in San Francisco. Riding a cable car is not just a "must-do" tourist experience, it is a fun, historic and inexpensive mode of public transportation where you can sit or stand with city locals and take in the views. There are three cable car lines still running through San Francisco: the Powell and Mason, the Powell and Hyde and the California. Each line offers its own thrills and points of interest. The Cable Car Museum is a frequent stop for riders of the Powell/Mason line. You can learn about the history of cable cars and see the huge engines that power the cables.

North Beach is San Francisco's "Little Italy." Destinations of note within the neighborhood include the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Coit Tower and Washington Square. Lesser known places worth visiting are the Vesuvio bar, a "historical monument to jazz, poetry, art and the good life of the Beat Generation" according to the establishment's website. For those who may get inspired by the literary vibe, just down the street from Vesuvio is City Lights Books, San Francisco's premiere independent bookstore, publishing company and a historic site. However, no experience will help you soak in the ambiance of North Beach more than sitting at one of the area's sidewalk cafes and people watching while you enjoy an authentic Italian cappuccino.

Whether you choose to walk, drive or ride a bike across it, the Golden Gate Bridge is another San Francisco must see. The bridge spans 1.7 miles across the Pacific Ocean, connecting San Francisco northward to the city of Sausalito. Plan to spend several hours at the world-famous bridge if it is your first visit because a trip can include a short hike to Fort Point, lunch at the Bridge Cafe, a visit to the Lone Sailor Memorial and a stroll through the gardens, where you can shop for souvenirs and have plenty of photo opportunities.
