George Hearst bought ranch land in San Simeon in 1865 and began preparations to make it home. In 1919 George and his son William Randolph contacted a San Francisco architect and commissioned her to start building what is now the Hearst Castle. Today, tours are offered daily throughout the immense property, gardens and buildings. Reservations are strongly recommended for the ranger-led tours of the castle.

At Ano Nueveo, a wildlife reserve established to provide a protected area for breeding and pupping elephant seals, visitors can watch hundreds of the marine mammals pup, breed and wean their young each year. Between December and March, ranger-led hikes to the seal colonies are available. Reservations are strongly suggested, especially on weekends as spots fill quickly. Between April and June, a visitor's permit is required (available at the park offices) for unguided hikes to the seal observation area.
