Local folklore suggests the town's name came about in 1830 when pirates used an old horse, otherwise known as a nag, with a lantern to flash a light at nearby boats at night.
Walking tours of Nags Head are popular. Visit Jockey's Ridge State Park to enjoy sand dunes, kite flying and a museum. For a look into aviation history, the Wright Brothers National Memorial is open to the public.
There are plenty of beach activities for water enthusiasts, such as fishing, swimming or snorkeling. Build a sand castle on the beach alongside sand castle artists.
At Nags Head, you can also go shopping for wares by local residents including jewelry, pottery and nautical-themed decorations.
Most people think a beach town such as Nags Head only has summer activities, which is not true. The historical Bodie Island Lighthouse visitor center is one of many places open year-round and features walking trails and marshes.
Because most of the activities on Nags Head are outside, pack plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent to avoid sunburn and bug bites.
