Those planning a trip to Italy generally make plans for larger, popular tourist attractions such as Rome and Venice. Hidden away along Italy's shoreline is Genoa, a seaport that many people do not know about or overlook.

    • Genoa, much like other cities, has many parts to it. There is the seaport, where the fishing industry is booming as well as trade and commerce. The main part, and most modern, is New Town. Old Town is a more popular area for tourists because it contains ancient architecture.

    • Old Town is full of ancient churches and Renaissance-style palaces. Its narrow alley ways give shopping and perusing a classic experience, taking you thousands of centuries back.

    Central Squares

    • Genoa has many squares that are full of art and commerce. The Piazza San Lorenzo is the most popular square because it is home to the 12th century cathedral Cattedrale di San Lorenzo.

    Porto Antico

    • Porto Antico is the old part. The port is the best place to shop and enjoy a meal near the water.

    Portofino

    • A short distance away is Portofino. This town is most famous as an old fishing village, and is popular for shopping and dining out. It is the best day trip away from the bustle of Genoa.
