New York Stock Exchange Building

The New York Stock Exchange building is the headquarters of the New York Stock Exchange. Located in Manhattan's Financial District it is both a New York City and national landmark. In addition to its size, it was also one of the most modern buildings of its time, containing amenities that previously had not been utilized in commercial building.
  1. Location

    • Located at 18 Broad St., between Wall Street and Exchange Place, the building is surrounded by many of the world's most important financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch.

    Year of Opening

    • The NYSE building opened on April 22, 1903. The cost of construction was $4 million.

    Architect

    • Architect George B. Post (1837-1913) designed the structure in the neoclassic style. An accomplished American architect trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition, he is most known for his commercial building designs. Though many of his projects have been demolished, some--including the Wisconsin State Capitol--still stand.

    Trading Floor

    • The New York Stock Exchange Building contains a 109 by 140 foot trading floor, with marble walls and a 72-foot high ceiling.

    Air Conditioning

    • The building was one of the first buildings in the world to utilize air conditioning.

    Hospital

    • An emergency clinic with a constant physician attendant was included in the construction of the New York Stock Exchange building.
