Things to Do in Skaneateles New York

Skaneateles, New York, a historic town in the central portion of the state, sits along the shores of the 16-mile-long Skaneateles Lake. The waterfront city, officially founded in 1833, features a host of tourist attractions, including taverns, cafes, galleries, boutiques and antique shops. The region also has parks, some of which offer concerts during the warm summer months.
  1. Antique and Classic Boat Show

    • Sponsored by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, the Antique and Classic Boat Show takes place in Skaneateles each year. Held at Clift Park along Skaneateles Lake and the village pier, the show can accommodate more than 80 boats. The event features live music, boat parades and cocktail hours. Various awards are handed out, including Best Race Boat, Best Antique Utility and Best Sailing Craft.

    Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles

    • Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles offers a Victorian Christmas celebration, with businesses and residents participating in a variety of events. Some cafes in town offer Victorian teas and Christmas luncheons, Storefront windows are dressed in holiday décor, and live musical acts perform practically every night, including Christmas choirs and carolers. Actors parade through town dressed as famous Victorian era personalities, such as Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria. The event runs each Saturday and Sunday, starting from Thanksgiving weekend until late December.

    The John D. Barrow Art Gallery

    • Perched near the shores of Skaneateles Lake, the John D. Barrow Art Gallery features more than 250 paintings by Barrow, a famed local artist. The gallery covers his work from the mid- and late 1800s. The gallery first opened its doors in 1900 and today sits attached to the Skaneateles Library. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Private tours for larger groups are available but must be arranged in advance.
