Baseball fans should be sure to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., 18 miles east of Edmeston. There they can enjoy memorabilia on display from some of baseball's greats. To experience the area's best fine art and folk art, visit the Fennimore Art Museum, also in Cooperstown. Cooperstown is also where you can get a taste of 19th century farming at the Farmers' Museum. For interactive science exhibits the whole family can enjoy, visit the Children's Museum of History, Natural History and Science in Utica, N.Y.
Visit the Oneida Community Mansion House in Oneida, N.Y., which was once home to the utopian religious Oneida community. Revisit history at the Oriskany Battlefield in Oriskany, which played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War. Tour Hyde Hall in Cooperstown, located on Otsego Lake, beside Glimmerglass State Park Country Mansion. Make a stop at Herkimer Home in Little Falls, N.Y., previously home to Revolutionary War hero Gen. Nicholas Herkimer.
Golf lovers can tee off at the Leatherstocking Golf Course at the Otesaga, located in Cooperstown. Skiing enthusiasts can hit the slopes at nearby Toggenburg Mountain in Fabius, N.Y., and Labrador Mountain in Truxton. Both ski areas are about an hour away from Edmeston. There are numerous state parks in the area as well, including Gilbert Lake State Park in the foothills of the Catskills and Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown.
For something family friendly, check out the animals at the Utica Zoo in Utica. Take a guided trip 156 feet below the Earth's surface in the Howe Caverns in Howes Cave, N.Y., about an hour away. For a more sophisticated outing, take in a night at the Glimmerlass Opera in Cooperstown. For a scenic view of Lake Otesgo, combined with a history lesson, take an hour longboat tour on the Glimmerglass Queen.
