What is a point of interest?

A point of interest (POI) is a geographically referenced location of specific interest to the user of a map. POIs can include natural features such as mountains, lakes, and rivers; man-made features such as buildings, roads, and bridges; and other features such as historical sites, tourist attractions, and businesses.

POIs are often used in conjunction with mapping applications, such as Google Maps and Apple Maps, to help users find their way to specific locations or to learn more about the area they are in. POIs can also be used in other applications, such as travel guides and real estate listings, to provide additional information about a location.

The data for POIs can come from a variety of sources, including government agencies, commercial data providers, and user-generated content. POIs are typically stored in a database, and can be accessed by users through a variety of interfaces, such as a map or a list.
