Travel Tips for Universal in Orlando, Florida

Universal Orlando Resort includes Universal Studios Florida, Universal's Islands of Adventure and the Wet 'n Wild water park. The two theme parks offer a wide range of thrill rides, interactive activities, shows and behind-the-scenes looks at filming sets for movies and TV shows, while the water park features roller coaster-like slides, a lazy river and a separate area for kids. Each section has different opportunities, and knowing park tips can be helpful when planning your trip.
  1. Universal Studios Florida

    • Universal Studios Florida is open 365 days a year, and the gates traditionally open at 9 a.m. Closing times vary, so check the park's website before you plan your trip trip. During the summer months, the park stays open as late as 10 p.m., but during the winter and other off-season months, it closes as early as 6 p.m. Plan accordingly to ensure you have as much time in the park as you want. Purchase your tickets ahead of time online to avoid lines, and arrive just before the gates open to beat the early rush. If you plan to visit both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, consider a two-day park-to-park ticket, which gives you access to both parks. Bring comfortable shoes, as you will walk several miles during the course of a day at Universal Studios, and do not forget sunscreen.

    Universal's Islands of Adventure

    • Universal's Islands of Adventure is home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which means the park is more crowded now than ever. To avoid the biggest crowds, steer clear of weekends and major travel months, such as the late spring and summer. Buy your tickets online and arrive at the gates early to maximize your time in the park and beat the late-morning rush. The park allows bottled water and small snacks, so you can save money on food and drinks by bringing your own. However, coolers and picnic lunches are not allowed. Small children might enjoy Seuss Landing, Islands of Adventure's Dr. Seuss-themed section that features child-friendly rides and the Green Eggs and Ham Cafe.

    Wet 'n Wild

    • The Wet 'n Wild water park features a handful of water-based thrill rides, such as steep, twisting, swirling slides and raft rides. The park also has a separate children's area with smaller, tamer rides and a large swimming pool playground area with a castle. Save money on Wet 'n Wild tickets by purchasing "flex" tickets online that include admission to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Check the Wet 'n Wild website for the most up-to-date park hours, but be aware that storms and cold temperatures can lead to the operating hours changing without notice. The park has restaurants and food stands, but you can save money by bringing in snacks and water. Rent a family-sized locker to store dry clothes and towels; otherwise you will have to rent a towel at the park. As of late 2010, family lockers are $13 plus tax, with a $3 refundable deposit.
