Outpouring lava from the nearby Mount Warning is responsible for the formation of Mount Tamborine. Although some might think the mountain is named after the musical instrument, it is actually derived from the Koori term used to describe the surrounding area around Mount Tamborine.
Mount Tamborine has a year-round warm climate with heavy rainfall from January through to March. This has created fertile soil conditions for growing commercial crops including avocado and macadamia nuts and for producing wine.
Mount Tamborine is also the collective term for the villages of North Tamborine, Eagle Heights, Tamborine Village and Canungra. The first Europeans settled in the area during the 1860s and the population grew to 5,100 people in 2008.
