Fun Things to Do in Orlando Other Than Disney

Though it is known primarily as a mecca for theme park enthusiasts, the city of Orlando in central Florida offers a much broader variety of family-oriented attractions. Beyond Walt Disney World Resort, a family vacation to Orlando can be enriched through encounters with local wildlife, thrilling performances and enjoyable educational activities.
  1. Orlando Science Center

    • The Orlando Science Center offers a multitude of interactive science exhibits. The DinoDigs exhibit features fossil replicas of dinosaurs, while the Science Park area allows visitors to explore scientific concepts such electricity and magnetism, sound waves and laser technology. The center's 310-seat, eight-story Dr. Phillips CineDome boasts an 8,000-square-foot screen and offers film screenings and planetarium projections.

      The Orlando Science Center is open every day except Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children under the age of 3 are admitted free. Contact the center for other admission rates.

    Gatorland

    • Founded in 1949, Gatorland is a 110-acre theme park that doubles as a wildlife preserve. It is home to thousands of alligators and crocodiles, as well as other reptile and bird species. Highlights include an aviary full of lorikeets, a petting zoo, a breeding marsh with an observation tower and the Gator Gully Splash Park, a water-based recreation area for children. The park also offers several animal shows, including wrestling matches between alligators and professional wranglers.

    Pirate's Dinner Adventure

    • Pirate's Dinner Adventure is one of several interactive dinner shows in the Orlando area. Performed on a replica of a 18th-century Spanish galleon anchored in a 300,000-gallon indoor lagoon, the storyline combines action, comedy and romance and is brought to life by acrobatics and special effects. The audience sits on six ships surrounding the lagoon. Each section is designated a pirate for whom to cheer. The dinner menu includes the option of soup or salad, a meat course, a dessert and two rounds of drinks. Vegetarian and kids' meals are also available.

      Tickets were $59.95 for adults and $39.95 for children between the ages of 3 and 11, as of 2010. Entrance for children under the age of 3 is free. Contact Pirate's Dinner Adventure for show times.
