Things to Do at Lake Garda in Italy

Lake Garda is in Northeastern Italy between Venice and Milan. On one side of the lake, the waters are surrounded by dramatic cliffs and mountains. On the other side, lowlands spread into the hills. Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake, with a handful of towns scattered around the perimeter. Measuring 51 kilometers at its longest point, there is a huge area to explore and many things to do.
  1. Windsurfing

    • Typical Windsurfing Action on Lake Garda

Wind conditions make Lake Garda a hugely popular windsurfing area. According to the experts at Windfinder.com, early mornings and late afternoons are generally the best times to windsurf due to favorable thermal-winds. The main windsurfing spot is Sarca. You can rent equipment at any number of locations on the perimeter of the lake.

    Historic Towns

    • Malcesine is a prominent, historic town where you can visit the Scaligero Castle and explore the 13th-century medieval towers. Take a ten-minute cable car ride to the top of Monte Baldo, nearly 2,000 meters above Malcesine, to enjoy a 360-degree view of the area. From the harbor, take a boat ride across the lake to Limone, a picturesque town filled with photo opportunities. As of September 2010, a day ticket on the ferries around the north section of the lake, including Limone, costs $20 per adult.

    Thermal Springs

    • Indulge in a relaxing trip to Sirmione on the southern side of Lake Garda. Here you can visit the natural thermal springs, which have been active since Roman times. Specifically, Lake Garda Tourism recommends visiting the thermal lake near the village of Cola di Lazise. The lake is open for swimming year round. Don't forget your bathing suit.

    Botanical Gardens

    • Gardone is a small, quiet town on the western side of Lake Garda. A short walk from the lake is Heller Garden, the main attraction in Gardone. In 2010, entry costs $15 per adult. Heller Garden is a botanical garden, flourishing with exotic plants that thrive in the mild climates. There are also modern works of art on display throughout the garden. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., March to October. While in Gardone, visit the Vittoriale, or large villa, that once belonged to a flamboyant Italian poet.
