The Grotta Azzurra, or Blue Grotto, is one of Capri's most well known. The immense sea cavern is approachable by boat through a natural opening in a rocky cliff-face. Inside the cavern, the clear, brilliantly blue water produces a spectacular natural light show. Light from a small underwater opening is reflected upward, creating an unearthly blue glow. This dramatic effect is due to the properties of refraction, as light is filtered through the water all red tones are absorbed and only the blue light spectrum is reflected back out, creating the intense azure hue that gives the grotto its name. The grotto has been a place of interest since Roman times, when the Emperor Tiberius decreed that the cave was the realm of sea-nymphs. Today, tours regularly enter the grotto.

In 1902, the German industrialist, Frederic Alfred Rupp, created the Augustus Gardens, which overlook the steepest face of Mount Solaro and the sea. Built atop Roman ruins, the gardens feature island flora. Paths wind through the gardens, providing a leisurely stroll that can easily take two hours. Benches and fountains provide stopping places for visitors to relax.
