Historic Restaurants in Indianapolis

Whether you are in Indianapolis on business or for pleasure, you can soak up a bit of Midwestern history by going to some of its restaurants. There are restaurants that are for a special occasion, while others dish out a sense of history in a more casual way. Either way, you will have a good meal while absorbing what your forefathers faced while developing that part of the country.
  1. The Rathskeller

    • The Rathskeller is the oldest restaurant in Indianapolis and still occupies the basement in the Athenaeum Building on East Michigan Street. You'll believe you're in one of the many beer halls in and around Munich, munching on traditional German food while you spend time with old friends. The Rathskeller is considered the best German restaurant in the state. Start off your meal with one of the many appetizers on the menu including a house favorite, stuffed mushrooms filled with cream cheese, bacon bits, chives and seasonings and topped with melted provolone and Parmesan cheese. Round out your typical German meal with one of many entrees such as Kassler Ripchen, which is a center-cut hardwood smoked pork chop topped with a sauce made of apples, golden raisins, walnuts and select herbs, or grilled lemon pepper chicken that's been marinated in olive oil, lemon juice and fresh garlic then lightly seasoned with lemon pepper then gently grilled. This dish is served over a bed of savory wild rice.

    Historic Steer-In Restaurant

    • Steer-In has been an east side institution since the early days when it was known as Harold's. Although the food there is rather pedestrian, no one living in Indianapolis has avoided the temptations to try the place. You have your choice--drive through, dine in or get your meal delivered. Steerin's signature entree is your choice of either turkey or roast beef Manhattans, which is meat piled high served with mashed potatoes, gravy and a vegetable. You can also order country fried chicken that is a breaded chicken breast served with mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable and a roll, or their own chili served on spaghetti topped with Parmesan cheese and garlic toast. The service is great, the meals are relatively cheap and the fare is far more healthy that you'd get at a fast-food joint.

    Turner's Restaurant

    • Elegant is about the only adjective you'd use to describe Turner's Restaurant in the historic Canterbury Hotel. Whether you live in Indianapolis and make Turner's a place for special occasions, or you live out of town and want a special evening away, Turner's will not disappoint. The award-winning chefs hand-craft each of your selections, which can range from American dishes like Colorado rack of lamb with vegetable ratatouille, sweet corn relish served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes to continental offerings such as crispy polenta with sautéed spinach, roasted portobello mushrooms and apples in a pomegranate balsamic vinaigrette. This is a very popular restaurant so reservations are highly recommended.
