Located less than half a mile from the Crescent Beach area of St. Augustine, Fort Matanzas National Monument is a perennial favorite amongst visitors and locals alike. The fort is situated on a sandy island at the mouth of the Matanzas River and was an important defensive structure for the city of St. Augustine during the 18th century. The monument consists of a Spanish fort built in 1740 and a 100-acre tract of salt marsh and barrier islands that is overseen by the National Park Service. The monument offers tours (both guided and solo), history talks and nature walks along the barrier island. The monument is only accessible by ferry, which leaves from the visitor center dock at half-past every hour, and is open year-round, with the exception of Christmas day. The monument and ferry are both free of charge, although donations are accepted.
