Five miles outside of Portland, Southern Maine's largest city, is the Lobster Shack at Two Lights. The Shack has stood on the rocky shores since the 1920s and owned by the Leadbetter family since 1969. They serve lobster on a seasonal basis, from the end of March to the end of October. Patrons may enjoy the lobster at picnic tables near the ocean and watch the ships in Portland Harbor or enjoy the view from the safety of the dining room. The Lobster Shack has received numerous accolades for its simple preparation of lobster, either in a roll or boiled. Anyway it is served, it's a delicious way to explore southern Maine.

Head north on Route One and take a detour onto Route 27 to Boothbay Harbor, home of the Boothbay Lobster Wharf. Lobsters come straight off the boat, into the tank and onto your plate. Make your lobster a true Maine clambake and add some steamers and corn on the cob. Dining is available in the dining room or on oceanside picnic tables. Retail and wholesale lobsters are available year-round, but the restaurant is open from mid-May to mid-October.

Continue north for a leisurely drive on Route One to Belfast and explore all it has to offer, especially Young's Lobster Pound and Seafood Restaurant. Young's lets its guests pick their lobsters from their 30,000 capacity aquarium. You may enjoy your lobster, boiled in salt water, and corn on the cob and melted butter outside on the waterfront or inside. Plus, if you couldn't get enough, you can have Young's lobsters shipped to your door. Unfortunately, you'll have to melt your own butter. Young's is opened year round, but the hours of operation fluctuate so it's best to call ahead.
