All of Orlando's top-rated attractions are in one way or another theme park related, making the parks the main attraction in the city of Orlando. Unless you are not a fan of the rides and activities, you will want to visit at least a couple of the many park offerings. Between the four Disney World parks, the two Universal Studios parks, and Sea World, you could spend almost the whole month -- any month -- enjoying Orlando.
If visiting the theme parks is on your agenda in June, plan to visit early in the month, before schools all over the east let out for summer vacation. Once they do, the parks begin their busiest sustained crowd levels of the year, and they don't let up until after Labor Day.
Also, for Star Wars fans, the first two weekends in June are Star Wars weekends, during which Star Wars characters and actors from the actual movies are available for pictures and autographs. Disney holds this event at the Disney Studios theme park.
Wine enthusiasts won't want to miss WineQuest, an annual wine tasting and auction that benefits disabled individuals in the Orlando area. Held during the first two weeks of June at the Grand Bohemian Hotel, the J.W. Marriott Orlando, the Ritz-Carlton Orlando and the Villas of Grand Cypress Golf Resort, WineQuest offers fine dining and golf outings, in addition to wine-related events.
Several local organizations take advantage of the balmy Florida evenings to host free outdoor movie showings. Locations for these showings include City Hall in Lake Mary and Central Park in Orlando on the second Thursday of June. There are also several outdoor movie showings at Centennial Park in Sanford, Candyland Park in Longwood and Uptown Altamonte on the third Friday of June. If you do happen to be at Disney World, Disney also shows movies nightly on the beach in front of the Beach Club Resort.
During the third week of June, the city of New Smyrna hosts the Seaside Festival, featuring four blocks of games, food and entertainment for all ages. New Smyrna Beach is about 45 minutes by car from the Orlando area; the festival is held on historic Flagler Avenue on the beachside from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A trip to the beach could be a relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of the theme parks, so even if you happen to be visiting the parks, this could be a welcome day trip.
