How to Visit Westwood Memorial Park

Fans come to Los Angeles to see celebrities, and if fans can't encounter them in person, they take tours of the neighborhoods where celebs live and the studios where they work. They look at their footprints in cement or their stars on Hollywood Boulevard. And if all else fails, the fans go see where their favorite celebs are spending eternity. Westwood Memorial Park, though a relatively small cemetery, probably has more concentrated star power per square foot than any other cemetery in town.

Instructions

    • 1

Head east down Wilshire Boulevard, turn left on Glendon, then left at number 1218. The cemetery is between a tall building and a parking garage and can be hard to find. It has square central lawn, with vaults and "garden" plots and one road all around it. Drive in, turn right and park on this road. For the purposes of this tour, however, you'll walk clockwise.

    • 2

The first thing you'll likely see upon entering the driveway is the mausoleum of industrialist Armand Hammer on the left. In this section you'll find the markers of maverick director John Cassavetes, "Green Acres" star Eva Gabor, comic actor Don Knotts and singer Mel Torme (his is the red marker). Up on the wall is a niche containing half of the ashes of writer Truman Capote, the other half having been scattered in a pond back east.

    • 3

Go past the Sanctuary of Tenderness to Sanctuary of Devotion, where you'll see the niche of "Lost in Space" star Jonathan Harris. Next to that in the Sanctuary of Tranquility is drummer Buddy Rich. Pass the Sanctuary of Memories and go on to the cemetery's star attraction in the Corridor of Memories, the vault of Marilyn Monroe, which is often stained with lipstick and grease from hundreds of admiring hands. The empty vault to the left of Monroe's has been purchased by Hugh Hefner, whose first "Playboy" magazine featured Monroe in the centerfold.

    • 4

Walk past the private, inaccessible Room of Prayer, final resting place of "Untouchables" star Robert Stack, past the Sanctuary of Peace to the Sanctuary of Love, where singer Dean Martin's crypt bears the inscription "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime."Continue on around past the Sanctuary of Remembrance to the Memory Garden where you see the slanted brown stone of talk-show host and mogul Merv Griffin, whose epitaph is “I will not be right back after this message.” Next to him, with the blank stone, is "Patton" star George C. Scott, and beyond Scott, comic actor Walter Matthau.

    • 5

Back behind this in the Garden of Serenity is the plaque of "Family Affair" star Brian Keith, who committed suicide after his daughter did the same. Nearby is Peggy Lee and comedienne Fanny Brice. Next to one fountain is a bench marking where the ashes of singer Peggy Lee are interred, while another fountain-side bench is for action star James Coburn.

    • 6

Proceed to Chapel Garden Estates. Comic actor Jack Lemmon's stone is marked like a film's opening credits: "Jack Lemmon in." Nearby is director Billy Wilder, whose stone reads, "I'm A Writer But Then Nobody's Perfect." Here you'll also find "All in the Family" star Carroll O' Connor and comedian Rodney Dangerfield, whose stone is inscribed "There Goes The Neighborhood."

    • 7

Pass the Rose Garden where the ashes of band leader Stan Kenton were strewn. The chapel and office are off to the left. Now you come to the hard part--tackling the central lawn. On the southeast corner, to your upper left, is the Urn Garden, with mostly square little markers. Further out, to the west, are regular graves in Section D. The urn garden's residents include Sebastian Cabot, who played "Mr. French" on "Family Affair."

    • 8

Head out to Section D and you may or may not find Pulitzer Prize-winning historians Will and Ariel Durant, "Elmer Gantry" star Burt Lancaster, Beach Boy Carl Wilson and troubled "Hogan's Heroes" star Bob Crane. Terry McQueen is also here, reportedly along with some of the ashes of her father, actor Steve McQueen. Eddie Albert of "Green Acres" fame is in plot 61, while "The Godfather's" Richard Conte is in 62 and actress Natalie Wood in 63. Musicians Roy Orbison and Frank Zappa are in unmarked plots 97 and 100, respectively. "It's a Wonderful Life's" Donna Reed is in 142, murdered centerfold Dorothy Stratten is in plot 170, studio boss Darryl Zanuck is in 173 and "Gilligan's Island's" Jim Backus is in space 203,
