What is the root language of Albanian?

The root language of Albanian is Illyrian, an Indo-European language that was spoken in the western Balkans in ancient times. Illyrian is believed to have been the parent language of both Albanian and Messapic, another extinct Indo-European language that was spoken in southern Italy. Albanian is the only surviving member of the Illyrian branch of the Indo-European language family.
