How to Calculate Chinese Signs

The Chinese astrological tradition dates back thousands of years. Ancient Chinese scholars believed personality traits were determined by the year of a person's birth. They named years for animals, in a 12-year cycle. Each animal reflects characteristics of personality and interpersonal chemistry. The Chinese zodiac is often referenced to determine compatibility before a marriage, as well as for personal guidance and divination. Calculating signs in the Chinese zodiac should take only minutes to learn and complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather information about the birth dates of any people whose signs you want to calculate.

    • 2

Use a sign chart. If it does not contain the exact year of birth, you will use addition and subtraction. For example, 1986 was the year of the tiger. If you wanted to find out the sign of someone born in 1998, but your chart was too old to include this year, subtract 12 years from it to find that it is also the year of the tiger. If you do not have a sign chart available, many websites offer an applet that will determine your sign automatically.

Compare signs of two individuals to gain insight into their compatibility. The Chinese zodiac has a strong focus on interactions between different signs. Some sign combinations are considered blessed by divine luck, while others are said to be ill-suited.
