How to Learn French With Pictures

French is the national language of France and its territories, in addition to being spoken by millions of people throughout the world. A Romance language with roots in Latin, French differs greatly from English. Learning a foreign language can be daunting and time-consuming, but a fairly easy way to begin is by using pictures to help you remember new vocabulary words. Doing so strengthens your memory and encourages you to easily identify everyday objects in French.

Instructions

Draw pictures onto the blank side of note cards of everyday objects that you would like to learn the words for. Or, if you are uncomfortable drawing, use a computer to print photographs of objects. Cut the photographs out and tape them to one side of the notecard.

Look up the French-English translation of each word in the dictionary. On the back of the note card, write how the French word is spelled phonetically. Writing the word as it sounds will help you remember how to pronounce the words correctly and will help you avoid making errors in pronunciation. For example, the French word for okay is "d'accord," but you do not pronounce the d at the end of the word. Therefore, when spoken the word sounds like "da core." Be sure to write the correct article that corresponds with the word on the note card as well. This helps you remember whether the word is masculine or feminine.

Practice learning the words with your note cards. Try to avoid looking at the word and use your memory to recall the word. Think of tricks to help you remember, if desired.
