How to Learn Dutch

Are you planning to travel to Belgium or the Netherlands? If you are, you might want to learn how to speak Dutch before you leave.

Take a course at a local college or community college. These courses are often slow paced. So if you plan to travel within the next 4 or so months, they might not be the best option for you. However, if you're planning to travel to Belgium or another Dutch speaking country and stay there for more than just a week, college-level courses will give you the most in depth training.

Have a language exchange with someone who speaks Dutch. Many immigrants learn to speak English by having conversations with Americans. Find someone who speaks Dutch and offer to help them practice English if he helps you to practice Dutch.

Try Rosetta Stone audio software. Rosetta Stone is the most popular program that teaches Dutch. This program not only has reading and listening activities, but, if you have a microphone plugged into your computer, Rosetta Stone software can analyze your accent. This helps you perfect your speech without traveling to a course. Unlike traditional language courses, Rosette Stone software does not ask you to memorize vocabulary. Instead, you "pick up" words through listening and matching exercises.

Sign up for an online language course. LearnDutch.org offers free Dutch listening lessons and grammar and vocabulary lists. Of course, you will not have the benefit of having a real person helping you with pronunciation.
