How to Learn English Greetings

English greetings are used in everyday speech, such as when you meet a friend, answer the phone, leave work for the day or go to bed at night. The English language has a variety of greetings, some of which are used at a specific time of day, year, holiday or occasion. Several everyday greetings start with the words, "Good" or "Happy," making them easier to learn, but some do not. A variation of the greeting is sometimes used.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn English greetings through a book or website. Pictures make the greetings easier to learn. Start with the words for the different times of day or holidays, such as morning, afternoon, evening and night. Combine the word, "Good," with the time of day, or "Happy" with the time of year to form the greeting, such as "Good morning" or "Happy New Year."

    • 2

Practice English greetings with a friend, tape, radio or your television and learn variations of English greetings, such as "Hello," "Hi," "Welcome" and "Nice to meet you" or "Goodbye," "Bye" and "See you." Sound out the words as you learn them.

Use a translation dictionary, book or website to learn greetings for different occasions, such as someone's birthday. Add the word, "Happy," to the translation to create the words.

Take a class that teaches you how to use English greetings for different moods. For example, you say "Congratulations!" when someone gets a new job or gets married; "Good Luck" to wish someone well on an interview; or "Get well soon" when someone is sick.
