Use your French passport or national identity card to legally enter Italy. Move into rental accommodation and secure a rental contract.
Go to your local town hall and bring with you originals and copies of your proof of income or savings in the form of bank statements, tax returns or a contract; original and copies of your passport or national identity card; passport photos; original and copies of your birth certificate; and original and copies of your rental contract.
Explain that you would like to apply for a certificato di residenza, a residence certificate. This certificate is necessary to, among other things, open a bank account, gain access to the Italian health service and buy a car.
Fill in the form with your personal information and attach your passport photos as well as photocopies of your personal documentation.
Wait for a local police officer to come to your address to confirm that you live there. They will usually arrive a few days after you have applied for your certificate but it may take as long as six months. Return to your local police headquarters and collect your residence certificate.
Proceed to the agenzia delle entrate, or local tax office, and explain that you would like to apply for a codice fiscale, or fiscal tax number. This is necessary for you to work legally in Italy and to buy property. Bring with you a copy of your passport.
Fill in the form with your personal information and attach a copy of your passport. Wait for your tax number to be sent to you by post. It will arrive in the form of a card.
