How to Live in a Motor Home With an Infant

An infant need not hinder your adventurous life on the road in a motor home. A baby takes up little space, and doesn't need many of the items that are frequently purchased for them. The RV life is a simple one and living in a motor home with an infant is relatively easy. All a baby needs is a place to sleep, a place to sit when the motor home is moving, something to eat, a little stimulation, and a place to be soothed. Your motor home will provide all this.

Use a small, portable combination playpen-crib for the infant to sleep in and play. This crib can be placed in the back bedroom when you are in the front of the motor home, or placed in the front living area when you are sleeping in the bedroom. Fold it up and place it in the storage area under the motor home when you are traveling.

    • 2

Breastfeed the infant for the easiest, most cost-effective and healthiest solution for nutrition. You will need to stop every three hours for a feeding if you are traveling in the motor home.

    • 3

Use liquid or powdered formula if breastfeeding isn't possible. Only mix powdered formula with bottled water, since a constant change in the type of water available when traveling may upset the baby's stomach. Have enough on hand so you won't run out if you are in the wilderness with your motor home.

Use a small, sturdy stroller for walking the baby. Regular walks will provide him with plenty of stimulation, sun and fresh air, which will help him to sleep better. Fold the stroller up and pack it in the storage area when the motor home is moving.

Invest in an infant swing to put the baby in. This one piece of equipment can be a lifesaver to sooth a cranky infant. Look for a model that uses the car seat as a carrier in the swing to cut down on additional items to store.

    • 6

Place the infant in a rear-facing car seat when traveling. Buckle the car seat in one of the rear seats, usually at the banquette with the table in the down position.

Use disposable diapers unless you have constant access to a washer and dryer. Place each diaper in a small plastic bag to reduce the smell, since you are living in tight quarters. Plastic grocery bags are good for this purpose.
