If you are a tourist or a business visitor from India and you are visiting the UK for a period not exceeding 12 months, you may be able to drive in the UK using your Indian driving license, provided that it is valid. You must also carry your passport or other valid travel document with you.
Please note that:
- You cannot exchange your Indian driving license for a UK driving license.
- If your Indian driving license is in a language other than English, you must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside with it.
- If your Indian driving license has expired, you will not be able to drive in the UK.
For staying in the UK for more than 12 months:
If you are a resident in the UK and your intention is to stay for more than 12 months, you must exchange your Indian driving license for a UK driving license within the first 12 months of your stay. You can do this by applying to the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).
To exchange your Indian driving license for a UK driving license, you must provide:
- A valid Indian driving license
- Proof of identity (passport or other valid travel document).
- Proof of residency in the UK (utility bill, rental agreement, etc.).
- A completed application form (D1 form)
