How to Convert a 220 Outlet to 110

Converting a 220 outlet to 110 volts can be done through extensive rewiring, but even for permanent use this is usually not recommended or necessary. Most American and Canadian travelers and expatriates simply rely on high-quality transformers, which are plugged into a 220 outlet and generate 110 volt electricity at the proper wattage. While motorized equipment may run more slowly due to the difference in frequency (hertz or Hz) between 220 and 110 volt electricity, the difference is usually not noticeable and many appliances can run on either 50 or 60 Hz.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the wattage of the appliances you plan to use. This is done by checking the safety information panel that can be found on the rear or bottom of all appliances sold in the United States.

    • 2

Select a transformer that corresponds to or exceeds the wattage of the highest wattage appliance you plan to use. They are usually available at electronics stores and electrical supply houses in the United States as well as abroad.

    • 3

Attach an adapter plug to the transformer cord it the transformer plug does not correspond to that of the outlet. British plugs differ from continental European plugs, as do Australian, Asian and some Israeli plugs, although all are rated for 220 volts or higher.

    • 4

Plug the transformer cord into the outlet.

    • 5

Plug the appliance cord into the transformer. An adapter plug may be necessary as well if the transformer outlet is not set up for American plugs.

    • 6

Turn on the transformer's on-off switch if present. Use your appliance as you would normally.
