How to Protect Yourself From Hotel Bed Bugs

Bed bug infestations are alive and real in U.S. and international hotels. According to Purdue University, bed bugs require blood to reproduce and to complete their life cycle. The bites themselves don't hurt, but they eventually produce red welts that itch. Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown, oval and wingless. Their bodies are flat, and they have long, slender legs and antennae. To help protect yourself from hotel bugs when traveling, you need to know what to look for and understand how bed bugs live.

Instructions

    • 1

Immediately inspect the hotel bed upon arrival with a flashlight. Look behind the headboard, and check the mattress and the box spring for active bed bug feces, eggs and shed skin.

    • 2

Check other hiding places in the hotel room. These areas include upholstered furniture, behind loose wall paper, moldings just above the floor, draperies and behind electric switch plates.

    • 3

Report any suspicious findings to the hotel management. Request a room change or go to another hotel.

    • 4

Place luggage and clothing on dressers or on luggage racks to avoid placing bags and personal items on beds or upholstered furnishings. These types of fixtures may harbor bed bugs.

    • 5

Keep your suitcases and laptop computers in their cases and closed when not in use. Search these items thoroughly before checking out of the room and again before bringing these items inside your home.
