How to Protect Yourself From Hotel Bedbugs

Bedbugs are biting insects found in homes, apartments, hotels/motels and other buildings. The bugs require warm blood to reproduce and complete their life cycle. When a bedbug bites you, you may notice an itchy red welt where the bug came into contact with your skin. You may not feel the bite, but frequent bites may be noticed. An infestation of bedbugs can disturb your sleep and cause health issues like anemia and blood loss. Protecting yourself from hotel bedbugs starts with checking the bedding in your hotel room.

Check the bedding in your hotel/motel room using a flashlight. Pull the mattress off the bed and remove the sheet. Look for bedbugs---they are flat, reddish-brown in color, about ¼-inch long and have an oval body. Take off the box spring and examine it, and check behind the headboard. Then check along the baseboard around the room.
If you see any bedbugs, feces (yellowish to reddish-black specks) or smell a sweetish odor, call the front desk of the hotel/motel immediately and ask for the manager or manager on duty.

Check the other furnishings in the room: sofas, chairs, cushions and curtains. Look inside the sofa and and chairs once you have removed the cushions. Shine a flashlight underneath tables and other surfaces as well.

Place your luggage, accessories and any clothing on top of a dresser or use the luggage rack, if available. Don't place your items on the bed, a sofa or chair. When you are not taking out clothes or accessories, close your luggage and keep it zipped. Also, keep any camera cases, briefcases and computer cases closed as well.

Search your luggage and other bags after leaving the hotel/motel and before you bring the luggage/bags into your home.
